Landing.jobs’ co-founder Pedro’s response to why he believes that done is indeed better than perfect.
A few weeks ago we published a blog post about how done isn’t better than perfect. It defends how simply hustling into getting it done, not caring to perfect it, won’t drive real sustainable growth.
My opinion? Bullshit.
The whole topic, that is. It’s a straw man; good for arguing over to see what we’re passionate about, but it will always end in a tie, because both sides are correct.
Done is great. Perfect is great. Finding the middle ground is the real challenge, and it’s where success happens. Knowing when to push towards one or the other, and recognising which way you went afterwards is what keeps me up at night, and why I wake up in the morning.
Here’s an incomplete list of my Dones and my Perfects. Prepare for landing (sorry, can’t resist).
Done was sitting down with José Paiva on the very first day and deciding we would not be making a “contest” startup. We were going to go big, or go home.
Done was hiring @ftpaulone for a summer internship and now he is the main owner of this blog and growth tactics.
Done was hiring @tiagomoreiras and @carrozo without knowing for sure if we’d be able to pay them at the end of the first month (sorry guys, it worked out in the end!).
Done was moving to London on a budget with a GoogleDrive of market research and a concept called #HirePedro that has helped us acquire our first English clients.
Perfect was being able to finally hire @pdfrod three years after telling him I would one day give him a job.
Perfect was pushing branding agency With Company to go beyond the original idea that replaced JOBBOX when we realised it might do more harm than good… and sticking at it until Landing.jobs became a reality.
Perfect was deciding to give up the safe idea of lasertag in a suburban industrial park and embrace the risk of taking over a marina and a sailboat for our first #LandingFestival.
Perfect is hearing the cow bell ring in the office more and more frequently — it’s the sound of us getting yet another tech professional a new job.
Done is perfect. Perfect is done. Two sides of the same coin. Just don’t stop flipping it.
