It’s Valentine’s Day, but that doesn’t mean that all is Love. This week, we saw a major announcement with the Mobile World Congress being canceled due to the Corona outbreak. While those are sad news, there’s plenty more we can discuss this week, so let’s jump straight to it:
Surveillance news, scandals, and updates are all over the news. This week, a Dutch court ordered the halt of an automated surveillance system for detecting welfare fraud. It was primarily deployed in low-income neighborhoods using a secret algorithm to identify which individuals might be at higher risk of committing benefit fraud. The court decided that the system was violating human rights. How far will this go?
This past Monday, the White House announced they are increasing funding for the development of artificial intelligence and quantum computing. After Trump signed an executive order that made A.I. research and development a national priority last year, the administration wants to spend $25 million on what it calls a national “quantum internet,” a network of machines designed to make it much harder to intercept digital communication. We’ve heard lots about AI and Quantum Computing, what do you think the USA, especially the White House has in store for us?
