Tech Hiring Conference

On November 20th, the Tech Hiring Conference took over Munich bringing a key topic to the city: Hypergrowth and Culture in the Recruitment Process.

To help us answer some of the main questions that flood this dynamic industry, we had the help of expert speakers through talks and also friendly panel discussions.

Sophie Theen, VP of People @Pollen, took the stage and tackled the different phases of Culture through Hypergrowth. On her day-to-day at Pollen, Sophie focuses on reinventing the importance of the People function within a conservative industry like financial services while still establishing a blueprint for the future working culture.

She is a believer that finding talent doesn’t happen fast and in bulk. Keeping hypergrowth in sustainable mode means hiring the right people at the right time, adapting culture and processes as the company grows. When a cultural shift paradigm occurs there’s a need to pin down the culture shifts. To recognize your start-up ingredients — your identity, your mission, your purpose and ability to empower your employees.

Emily Scanlan, Culture Coordinator EMEA @HubSpot, showed how culture education is baked into the employment brand and the candidate experience which leads most people to be familiarized with it before their first day on the job.

Emily discussed how even though people have dramatically changed how they live and work, many organizations operate as if they are frozen in time, still focussing on money above all else. The ‘obsession’ should be over customers, nor competitors. Power is gained by sharing knowledge, not hoarding it.

On her talk, Renita Käsper, Talent Acquisition Team Lead @Babbel, explained how to build a winning hiring process. By matching the company’s and the candidate’s values there’s a better cultural fit which leads to people staying longer and being happier with their jobs. For that, it’s important to get your company storytelling right, using the right words in order to target and get people with the right values to apply. Although skills are essential you can always train a person to do their job, it is much more difficult to teach a person to share your organisation’s values.

On the discussion panels, we approached how to Work with Recruitment Agencies in the Future of Work and analysed the clash between Hiring Managers vs In-house Recruiters, finding that companies value personalization and want to partner up with solutions that recruit for cultural fit as well as technical fit.
