Landing.Tech #13 — AI-powered smart glasses are China’s latest weapon against COVID-19

How many times have your ordered food since you are social distancing?

Unlocking tech talent stories

Tomorrow will be a National holiday here in Portugal so I’m writing to you on a Thursday. It’s also Easter weekend, but authorities will forbid people of trying to do the usual countryside escapes to join their families. It’s a matter of doing the right thing now so we are able to return to the usual routine as soon as possible. The same can be said with Tech — big companies are trying to help the community fighting the pandemia, and only then will go back to their usual tasks.

Nonetheless and even though everybody’s efforts are on trying to contain and deal with the virus, you can still see companies and people using technology to adapt and face this period of history we’re facing. Let’s check a couple of them:

Lots of industries are struggling to cope with the effects of social distancing and restaurants with physical dining rooms are no different. The ones who could adapt quickly did it to provide takeout and delivery, in order to have some revenue streams coming in during this time. Google is trying to help them and they just released a Google Maps update that makes it easier to find food for takeout and delivery. How many times have your ordered food since you are social distancing? I did it 3 times, there have been days where I just couldn’t resist some junk good getting in my belly. *shame*

I found this really cool, despite the circumstances. Security staff in a Park using AI-Powered Smart Glasses to detect people with fevers is something that a couple of years ago I could only imagine and see it in the movies, but not anymore. It’s real, and it is being used in China to fight COVID-19. Besides detecting fevers they also support facial recognition. They are eliminating cues in the park entrances by using the glasses to check temperatures faster. How cool is that?

This one is more entertainment field but I still spent some time checking it. Ever thought of what Times Square should look like pretty much empty? You can see that through Miekki’s Twitch account. He’s a New York City bike messenger who’s delivering food to people for Uber Eats. It’s crazy how you can see New York’s daily evolution through his streams. Ah! The Naked Cowboy has some guest appearances sometimes.

Times are crazy, but at least I’m still having Easter chocolate eggs this weekend. I hope you also enjoy your weekend and let’s make sure we stay home.

The future starts today.
