How to prepare for the #LandingjobsFest

This quick guide will tell you everything you need to know about what you should do before and during the Festival.

Unlocking tech talent stories

May 31, 2016

The Festival is fast approaching! Very few days are left before we set sail on this journey once more. Are you excited? We’re excited.

This quick guide will tell you everything you need to know about what you should do before and during the Festival. See you on Friday! ⛵

TL;DR > What do you want to know?

How to get to the Marina

Located on the Tagus Estuary, the Lisbon Marina is close to the capital’s airport and city centre. It’s a part of Parque das Nações, a leisure, commercial and residential area, and the most modern neighbourhood in Lisbon.

There are three ways you can get to the Festival: by car, bus or metro.

Getting there by metro 🚇

Take the red line and stop at either “Oriente” or “Cabo Ruivo” station. If you’re coming directly from the airport, it’s just three or four stops away, respectively, towards “São Sebastião”. When you get off, you can either take the 728 Carris bus (check below) or enjoy a 20-minute walk by the riverside.

Getting there by bus 🚌

The nearest bus stop is 100m away on Avenida dos Oceanos. Take Carris bus number 728, which will take you to and from the centre of Lisbon (with stops at Belém, Alcântara, Cais do Sodré Station, Santa Apolónia Station, and Oriente Station), and get off at “Passeio Adamastor”. You can check the bus schedule here.

Cross the street to Rua dos Aventureiros and walk towards the riverside. You’ll immediately see the Marina on your left.

Getting there by car 🚗

From the centre of Oriente on Av. Marechal Gomes da Costa to Olivais Sul, follow until you reach the Expo 98 roundabout. Take the second exit towards Alameda dos Oceanos, turn right on Rua dos Argonautas, and follow it until you find the Marina Parque das Nações.

There is a private space at the Marina where you can park your car, and the cost is maximum 6€/day.

You can also book a car with our partner Citydrive. Every attendee will receive a €10 voucher. Check this page for a step by step to how it works and this video:

Getting there by taxi 🚕

You can also get to the Marina by taxi with our partner mytaxi. Every attendee will receive a €15 discount code to use on their iOS or Android app. Closer to the Festival, you will receive the discount code via e-mail to use during the event.

When to check-in

Check-in starts at 4:00pm on Friday, June 3. We open early but don’t worry, we’ll be waiting for you all night long and you can check-in whenever you arrive! For those eligible to go aboard the boats, please arrive early to make sure you go on the boat you want.

If you only manage to go on the second day, we’ll still have a late check-in set up after 2:00pm on Saturday, June 4.

How to keep in touch

As you might know, we’re all over the interwebs, but we’re focusing on different things on each of our channels. If you haven’t yet, sign up, like us, follow us, and all those social thingies we do nowadays.

Eventfuel.io

Eventfuel.io is our official Landing.jobs Festival event app, and with it you’ll be able to check the Festival schedule, general info, details about our Speakers and their panel discussions and talks, and give feedback.

Until Wednesday afternoon (June 1), we’ll send you an email with the link to the app. We’ll also have a team to help you set it up at the check-in.

Twitter

We’ll be live tweeting the event throughout both days! Check our Twitter for announcements, pictures, and lots of hashtags.

Landing.Slack

We’re going to be using our community’s Slack for engaging with you guys more closely and offering support whenever you need it. We’re setting up different Festival channels, from #festival_boats to #festival_hackathon, so you know where to publish something or ask a question.

We’re also creating a #festival_photos channel, where you can feel free to share your photos with everyone! You can join us here.

Instagram, Landing.party, Facebook event

These three channels will be used sporadically during the Festival, and where we will mostly share photos and a few general announcements. You can follow us on Instagram, join our group Landing.party on Facebook, and let us know you’re going on our Festival Facebook event page.

Wherever you share and post, remember to use our official hashtag (we’re such millennials), #LandingjobsFest.

How to present yourself

Dress code

First, don’t forget to get dressed. Hell, show a little skin — it’s going to be a warm and sunny weekend! Hopefully we didn’t just jinx it.

Seriously, though, our dress code is the one you feel most comfortable in. Wear a suit, wear jeans, wear a onesie pyjama, wear shorts. It’s casual and informal. The rest is on you!

Come prepared

Besides the basics, it’s important to come to the Festival prepared. Have a look at all the companies who will be present at the Marina and aboard the boats (all the Gold, Platinum and Diamond sponsors).

Research them, see which ones tickle your fancy so you can directly talk to them at the Festival. That way, you’ll know the right thing to say when you hear the question,“So why do you want to work with us?”. Even seasickness won’t get in the way!

How to network

Prepare your “elevator pitch” of yourself and the unique benefits you can offer to the company, and be prepared for common interview questions. Don’t be shy and intimidated by the employer; he or she is there to do a job — to meet great tech pros like you. Say hello, say your name and let it flow.

Have a few questions prepared for them to show you’re interested in the company (use your previous research!), especially if you nail an interview at the Festival — have your Landing.jobs profile and CV at the ready on your phone.

It’s important to network with a wide variety of people, not just employers. You can meet and get to know your fellow tech peers and other professionals in attendance, such as our lovely Speakers. Work the room and try to understand every person’s body language to see if they’re receptive towards starting a conversation. If someone looks really engaged in a conversation, it’s best to wait your turn instead of interrupting them!

Prepare a good CV

If you’re attending the Festival, it means you have a Landing.jobs profile. Groom it, make it tight, make it — rather, you — attractive. That way you’ll impress us and be one of the chosen ones to come aboard the boats, and you’ll impress the employers and even get interviewed at the Festival.

Apply to jobs now

You can already apply for jobs at companies that will be present at the Festival! We have a specific page for those job offers, and we’ll be adding some more up until the event. When you click on them, you can use our fast apply feature:

Blip

It uses your current Landing.jobs profile information and CV, so again, make sure they’re top notch before hitting the button!

How the Festival will work

A lot of things will be happening simultaneously, so have a look at our schedule beforehand to decide which panels you’d like to attend, which company presentations you’d like to see, and which activities you want to participate in.

Also, if you received an email saying you’re eligible to come aboard the boats (if you’re one of the challenge winners, you have a seat guaranteed in one of these three boats!), registrations are first come, first-served. Choose the one that’s best for you before so you can let us know at the check-in.

There are 4 different boats, 3 of which you can choose to board: Landing.jobs Boat, June 3 at 6pm; Hitachi Consulting boat, June 4 at 3pm; and Seedrs (and Blip) boat, June 4 at 6pm. Each trip will take 3 hours.

As our Diamond Sponsor, Blip is able to choose the candidates they want to bring aboard. Don’t worry if you don’t get chosen and want to meet them — blippers will be on every single boat!

Meanwhile, the career fair with every company’s stands will always be along the Marina.

Important info ⚠️

Food & Drinks

We’ll have around 10 food trucks with different food and drinks to keep your stomach happy. Each meal should cost around €5–7.

Bring cash!

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get an ATM for the event, so we highly advise you to bring some cash with you, otherwise you sadly won’t be able to try our many delicacies. Sorry. 😞

The team here at Landing.jobs is coming together to make it all happen. As you can see, we’re all very stressed excited. 💪
