Ciao! I’m Giovanna Trimoldi, Business Developer for Italy here at Landing.jobs.
One of our main goals for 2016 is to further our presence in markets outside of Portugal. I’m excited to say that one of those countries will be Italy.
The Italian startup scene is stepping up and Landing.jobs is eager to establish that connection with the city. Just behind the UK and Germany, The Boot’s tech startup sector is successfully growing and is becoming one of the biggest in Europe. Milan and Rome are the biggest tech hubs, not only in terms of startups, but in terms of incubators as well.
There are a lot of Italian startups on the rise, such as MusixMatch, Iubenda, AppsBuilder, and Yoox, and a few of them have even expanded outside of Europe. There is a huge number of tech talent going around, especially Software Developers and Architects who are eager to travel and have a part in this evergrowing market.
But before I go any further, you may be wondering how I, Giovanna, an Italian girl from Roma, landed this job at Landing.jobs. During one of our last Team Lunches here at the office, we were asked to answer a seemingly simple question: “how did you end up working at Landing.jobs?”
Mental exercising to the time I first arrived in Lisbon, when I was about to start my Erasmus experience, I had no idea or expectations of what the future would bring me. It’s a long story (like all Erasmus stories…), but I can sum up that year in a single word: internationality.
During Erasmus, your day to day life is hectic. You constantly bump into new experiences, powered by a frenetic rhythm, and you have to get used to it. From the moment I did, I didn’t want that feeling to go away. I wanted to maintain an international, fast-paced lifestyle, and this is basically how I found Landing.jobs.
We have a lot of team members from different countries (Brazil, Israel, The Netherlands, to name a few), and that immediately spoke to me. I couldn’t #aimformore (sorry, Pedro) than a challenging experience in a fast-paced and international work environment, while having the opportunity of helping people find their career path.
A Roman in Milan
As soon as we welcomed Italian companies on our platform, I became the ragazza italiana venturing into this journey, and was almost immediately asked to travel to Milan to personally experience what goes on in the city’s tech scene with my own eyes. As we like to say here at Landing.jobs, “let’s do it”. And I did.
I spent 4 days in Milan, and they have absolutely been the fullest and fastest days of my life: running to catch the metro, sprinting to have meetings with companies with the occasional stop for a foamy cappuccino — I didn’t stop. Even though it’s such a fast city, everyone had the time to make me feel welcome.
During a coffee break with one of the members of United Ventures, Enrico Mattiazzi, I was very glad to hear about a vivid scene and the increase of venture capital money in the Italian market. Here are some of the places I had the opportunity to visit:
1. Talent Garden
After having yet another sweet and sizzling cappuccino, this time with Rasa Strumskyte, CMO at Talent Garden, Pedro and I had the opportunity to visit this giant growing global platform for digital, tech and creative entrepreneurs, which provides a huge co-working space to the community of successful professionals by sharing innovation with their members. Oh, and they even have a swimming pool. On the roof.
2. ImpactHub Milano
ImpactHub is an incubator with an international network for creative professionals, specifically focused on social innovation.
When Stefania Marucci, Space & Community Manager at ImpactHub, knew I was going to be in Milan, she immediately invited me over to visit their co-working space. It was raining like hell the day I met Davide Pitzolu, Scaling Manager, but nothing could have calmed my curiosity to visit ImpactHub. I honestly felt like home there with the amazing vintage interior design. Hope to see you soon, guys!

3. Copernico
Everyone I met in the city had mentioned it to me. Copernico is another pleasant work space with an environment in which people aggregate and share content, and organise initiatives and events that promote the development of business. That meeting was one of the funniest ones, as well, because I had to stall and retain busy people’s attention for more than 1 hour while Pedro’s flight got delayed.
The Italian tech capital
Although it is always identified as the city of fashion and design, Milan is also the main tech city in Italy, and its startups live in an international mood. Mind you, it’s one of those cities where the sun doesn’t really come out — it has to be a part of another solar system.
Even so, the Milanesi are lovely people. You can imagine how Rome and Milan love each other (hem, hem), but being born and raised in Rome, I was pleasantly surprised to like not only the city, but its locals, too. Also, Milan’s metro takes you everywhere in the city. And when I say everywhere, I mean everywhere.
