toucanBox is an award-winning subscription service that provides arts and crafts activities for children aged 3 to 8 years old. We're backed by renowned VCs and have exciting ambitions to grow our strong customer base in the UK and expand internationally.

We have a fantastically diverse team of approximately 50 people, split between the office and the factory. We all care about the product and take pride in what we do.

We're looking for a strong front-end developer with a good grasp of the fundamentals of front-end application design and a proven record of building tested, robust and scalable solutions. You’ll have experience working in a small multi-disciplinary team, building delightful customer-oriented experiences. You can make decisions based on user feedback, testing, and data and enjoy being autonomous. You’ll take full ownership of your work, and responsibility for every last detail, from project kick-off to completion.

The team is quite small and nimble. We work using a loosely defined agile process which suits our size, with everyone involved in all stages of the software development lifecycle. You'll like learning new skills and taking on tasks outside your comfort zone - including some back-end development tasks in Ruby or Go.

Main requirements

  • Demonstrable programming experience in JavaScript.
  • Good working knowledge of one or more JS frameworks (e.g. Vue.js, Angular, React)
  • Good understanding of agile practices
  • Routine use of source control and test frameworks
  • HTML and CSS (SCSS)
  • ERB templating
  • Familiarity with development tools such as npm, Webpack, Bundler, Gulp, etc.
  • Responsive web design
  • You know good UX and visual design when you see it

Nice to have

  • Ruby
  • Go
  • Docker
  • AWS
  • Rancher or other container orchestration too

  • Training and support to learn the fundamentals of Ruby
  • Support with your self-development: hacker time, attending conferences, meet ups etc.
  • Opportunity to help redefine an industry in a fun, fast paced, fast growing tech business
  • Opportunity to grow and evolve the role into whatever you make it
  • Competitive startup salary
  • An experienced management team backed by leading investors
  • Regular company socials
  • Private medical insurance
  • Vitality health programme
  • Cashplan
  • Employer pension contribution
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Childcare vouchers
  • Table-tennis and other games
  • Fully-stocked fridge
