Job Purpose

The main purpose of this SRE role is to work continuously on monitoring, analysis and improvements of reliability, scalability and performance of Ocado Smart Platform. This purpose shall be achieved by collaboration on building and maintaining high-quality platforms and application components; providing advisory on architecture and best practices; advocating and promoting best practices and focus on quality and reliability of software products.


Roles & Responsibilities

Your main responsibility is to participate effectively in all stages of systems development life cycle including:

  • Working on SLOs/SLIs definition, visualisation and reporting
  • Analysis and improvements of systems reliability, scalability and performance
  • Building and maintaining comprehensive monitoring and alerting solutions
  • Contribution to platforms and applications architectural design
  • Capacity planning, scalability analysis and performance optimisation
  • Environments and workflows automation (scripting/coding)
  • Software and data analysis and troubleshooting
  • Investigation and resolution of production issues
  • Research, development & optimisation

You are also responsible for:

  • Continuously improving the standards of software craftsmanship by following the latest trends in IT, frameworks, tools and techniques, attending conferences, mentoring others, performing code reviews or doing pair programming
  • Making sure that our software is testable and properly tested (preferably in an automated way)
  • Gathering data to verify our assumptions, in the production, provide an immediate feedback to all stakeholders
  • Implement monitoring and alerting, so that we know immediately when things go wrong
  • Constantly looking for improvements and learn from our mistake
  • Working closely with team leaders to set technical direction within the team and to ensure software developed is of a consistently high standard, cohesive and meets business objectives
  • Working closely with Team Leader on issues related to requirements and design
  • Mentoring colleagues and take an active role in their development

Main requirements

Desired skills & competencies


  • University degree in computer science or technology
  • Good spoken and written English
  • Understanding of core concepts of Site Reliability Engineering
  • Hands on experience in cloud platforms such as AWS and/or GCP
  • Hands on experience in Linux server environments
  • Solid knowledge in designing, analysing and troubleshooting large-scale web systems; understanding microservices architecture and patterns
  • Hands-on experience with automation and orchestration of microservices
  • Solid understanding and working experience in building monitoring-alerting solutions for web platforms
  • Experience in Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery; understanding source code versioning and software development life-cycle from design to testing and deployment
  • Understanding of SQL and NoSQL databases
  • Understanding of TCP/IP networking, clustering, high-availability and infrastructure resilience
  • Demonstrable Java or Python programming ability

  • Source code and configuration files (i.a. automation, IaC, supporting tools, scripts, plug-ins, etc.)

  • Dashboards, metrics visualisation, charts and reports
  • Presentations (i.a. describing architectures, best practices, problems-solutions, workflows, etc.)
  • Documents:
    • Design of solutions
    • Analysis and recommendations that influence software architecture
    • Technical documentation of tools/systems

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of Kanban, SCRUM and/or other Agile methodologies
  • Proven ability of tackling challenging projects
  • Masters or other postgraduate qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent.
