We’re looking for a collaborative and humble Data Engineer to help us build a green field microservices backend, working with some amazing engineers and data scientists to make that happen.

Where you can have impact

  • This is a green field microservice system - ideally you will have experience of building something like this before and be excited to start again from scratch and own the design / decisions.
  • We are building a real-time, event driven architecture, so you will get to use modern ETL tools and cloud infrastructure. You will love eventual consistency.
  • We have an ever increasing flow of data. We need to build data pipelines that work for 100x our current throughput and that's only to cover the next 12 months!
  • We are growing fast, so building robust, secure and maintainable API to serve data is our top priority. You will know what that involves and have the battle scars to prove it.
  • We’re big on DevOps, everyone owns their code to production and after, you will be a fan of IaC - we use Terraform.

  • You have experience with deployment pipelines and continuous delivery on cloud platforms (we use Google Cloud Platform, Docker).
  • You’re comfortable using Python / Java or Scala in production with an eye for quality and experience in data streaming (for real, not just the buzzword). We're pretty agnostic, but currently using Python a lot.
  • You’re great at data modelling and data migrations.
  • You are customer centric and work well with product owners.
  • You’ve built up a good understanding of *nix command line including tools such as ssh and Git.
  • Ideally you’ve created complex data processing pipelines in a production environment, ideally streaming on Google Cloud Platform with systems like BigQuery, Kafka, Beam, any other streaming platform.

  • You’re ideally product focused and understand the balance between speed of delivery and quality.
  • If you have experienced scaling a system / team that’s also great, we would love people who have built up experience in this area.
  • You’ve failed at things before. You’ve seen it, lived it and learnt from it and can help us identify potential pitfalls.
  • You have an entrepreneurial streak, with some great examples of how you saw an opportunity and made it happen.

  • You ain't gonna need it (YAGNI).
  • You’re a great communicator and want to understand the commercial impact and play nicely with product.
  • You know when to be decisive and when to ensure decisions are made quickly and efficiently.
  • You have strong opinions weakly held - you can defend a position, but give it up easily when consensus is against you even if you're right.
  • You’re humble, no room for brilliant jerks.
  • You’re a strong team player, knows how to get others to work well together.

Main requirements

  • Experience with Python or other programming language, but with an interest in working with Python.
  • Experience with SQL and databases

  • The most competitive salary we can afford (DOE)
  • Meaningful equity. We want people to have a serious stake in the business so that all of our interests are aligned. It’s your baby too.
  • 25 days holiday – and we will make you take it.
  • Limitless challenge and scope for development. You are joining us at a very exciting time and have the opportunity to take this role in your preferred direction as we grow.
  • As much of our time as you need. You professional growth is important to us, and we want to help you to be awesome.
  • Sensible problems that will add real value to real people. This isn’t a HBO parody company.
  • Flexible working where possible.
  • Your choice of the best kit money can buy. Even that absurdly priced escape-key-less macbook. If you want it.
