Intro

About us

We believe that a developer is not just someone who writes code: we discuss every feature with the Product team, we love to give input on new ideas and the challenges coming ahead. We love to analyze, design, develop, test and release every new contribution we make, because after all, we own the product too.

We're eager to push the boundaries and we see our role in technology not just as a payslip: it's our passion, a tool to transform reality. We think that a language or framework is just a tool to get the job done and we don't necessarily stick to any of them. We enjoy watching how an API or a Frontend runs smooth on production (and we get really angry when we see those milliseconds going up!).

What does the role involve?

You will be part of the Backend team, responsible for the server-side of the platform. You'll participate in the complete cycle of product development, applying your knowledge to the analysis, design, programming, implementation and maintenance stages, next to Product, Frontend and Mobile teams. The position reports directly to the Head of Backend and Infrastructure and you will have the opportunity to lead initiatives end to end across the squad teams.

We are looking for a highly competent Java engineer, passionate about technology, able to propose new ideas to help the platform lead the market globally, and eager to explore new technologies. You need to be proactive and work effectively as part of a team, while also able to work efficiently and autonomously. You’ll be joining the vibrant and friendly Debut team in our brand new offices near Farringdon, with the opportunity to grow professionally in a startup with a steep growth trajectory.

What will I be doing if I join?

  • Participating in the entire product development lifecycle, to embrace our vision of where we want to be in the short, medium and long-term.
  • Contributing to and continuing to build the Backend platform at a high standard.
  • Working closely with the Product team to define and discuss new features.
  • Maintaining the quality of the platform following each deploy, and monitoring errors, stability, and KPI
    metrics.
  • Managing to ship all the way to the Production, while keeping the product true to its values and heart.
  • Suggesting to improve the development process in any way you consider appropriate.

Main requirements

Experience building scalable and reliable REST APIs.

  • Solid knowledge of Java and its web frameworks, with at least 5 years of experience.
  • Knowledge on building reusable code and libraries following best practices of the industry.
  • First-hand knowledge working with Redis, Elasticsearch or other NoSQL databases.
  • Optimization of applications for maximum speed and scalability.
  • Management of cloud computing solutions, ideally GCP.
  • Manage cutting-edge technologies to improve legacy applications.
  • Experience stressing and monitoring the platform in production.

Nice to have

  • Experience with microservices and micro-frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with Kotlin, Python or node.js apps
  • Experience configuring and deploying Docker / Kubernetes / Helm
  • Experience creating CI/CD pipelines

Perks

Still wondering if you could be the one? Apply if you:

  • Have the right to work in the UK (we can't sponsor Tier 2 visas).
  • Don’t need to be told how to do things, and you know that hard work is an absolute must to make a
    difference.
  • See every challenge or unexpected situation as an opportunity to grow
  • Obsessed with quality but also down-to-earth-- Ivory towers don’t exist in real life.
  • Apply the boy scout rule: if you see something wrong, you get stuck in by fixing it and applying tests
  • Are hands on, like to investigate, experiment, and prove your point through actions.
  • Demonstrate the impact your work and decisions have had in your previous teams/companies with
    pride.
  • Open to explore / develop in new technologies. You feel the passion for solving problems and making
decisions, using the technology as a tool.
